Author Evelyn Waugh was born - 1903
British author Evelyn Waugh was born on October 28, 1903 in London, England. He was a writer of novels, biographies and travel books. He was also a prolific journalist and reviewer. His best-known works include Decline and Fall (1928) and A Handful of Dust (1934), Brideshead Revisited (1945) and Sword of Honour (1952–61). The son of a publisher, Waugh was educated at Oxford, and worked briefly as a school teacher before becoming a full-time writer. As a young man, he acquired many fashionable and aristocratic friends, and developed a taste for country house society that never left him. In the 1930s he travelled extensively, often as a special newspaper correspondent. He served in the British armed forces throughout World War II. All these experiences, and the wide range of people he encountered, were used in his novels. Health issues plagued his later years, and he died from heart failure on April 10, 1966 in Combe Florey, Somerset, England.
